WXYZ - St. Vincent de Paul will host the Friends of the Poor walk/run event this weekend.
This is the fifth year for the annual event that helps raise funds for the community in need.
The walk/run kicks off at 10 a.m. at Milliken State Park with radio personality Cynthia Canty as an honorary chairperson. Registration begins at 9 a.m.
“I am honored to serve as chairperson for this special event to benefit the important work of SVdP,” said Canty. “From feeding the hungry to providing children with special camp experiences, this organization plays a vital role in the lives of thousands throughout Metro Detroit.”
Walkers are encouraged to collect pledges from supporters. All funds will remain in the neighborhoods designated by each walker and their supporters.
Saturday's event is part of a national fundraising effort to benefit the nation's poor. The 2011 walk/run event was held at more than 200 places around the country and raised more than $1.4 million dollars.
