Marine City, Mich. (WXYZ) - Hundreds of mourners carrying American flags and heavy hearts lined the streets of Marine City, MI.
They're honoring the memory of Army Pfc. Shane Reifert who gave his life in Afghanistan. Reifert died after his unit was attacked by insurgents on November 6, 2010.
Funeral attendees didn't care that they couldn't fit inside Our Holy Cross Parish Church or that they never actually met him, they came to pay their respects. Mourners came to salute his service and comfort his family.
Protesters that were expected at the church never showed up. "We are thankful that the focus stayed where it should be, a day of respect for a hero," said Marine City Police Chief Don Tillery.
Shane Reifert will be laid to rest at 12:30 p.m., Thursday November 18th, in Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly Township.
