(WXYZ) - According to a new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics, most medications may be safe for nursing mothers.
The report claims many women who are breastfeeding are "inappropriately" counseled to discontinue some medications.
Experts say the approach may be unnecessary because although many drugs in the blood of breastfeeding women transfer to their breast milk, the presence of those drugs is often in relatively small amounts.
Others do not transfer at all.
The AAP report says certain prescription pain medication may not be safe but short-acting pain relievers are acceptable.
Of course, be sure to always consult your doctor before taking medication while breastfeeding.
