(WXYZ) - When it comes to major surgery in the United States, the most common is Cesarean sections on pregnant women. Nearly one in every three babies is now born through a c-section.
Dr. Marvin Lipman tells Consumer Reports that "there are some situations in which performing a c-section is preferred, but that's major surgery. In most cases, the safest way, for mother and baby, is to deliver vaginally."
There are now even support groups for women who believe that they had a c-section unnecessarily. If a woman's first birth is a c-section, there is about a 90% chance that subsequent births will also be c-sections.
