(WXYZ) - I-75 has reopened after a deadly massive pileup in southwest Detroit.
Michigan State Police confirm three fatalities following the multiple vehicle crash. Police say two of the victims were step-siblings--a 7-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl from Ontario . The third fatality was a 54-year-old Allen Park man in a separate vehicle, according to family members.
Both southbound I-75 at Springwells in southwest Detroit and northbound I-75 were closed for 7 hours on Thursday. Fifteen to 20 people have been transported to nearby hospitals.
Rob Morosi from MDOT tells 7 Action News the accident happened just after 9:00 a.m. over the Rouge River bridge. Semi trucks are involved and there are reports that at least one truck lost its load.
MDOT is reporting that at least 30 vehicles were involved in the pileup. Witnesses say there were white-out conditions at the time of the crash. The view from Chopper 7 shows the devastation. Dozens of smashed-up vehicles were all over the freeway.
"It got icy and slippery as Hell and my car started to lose control," said Paul Roper, whose car was hit in the pileup.
At least six accidents occurred within the two-mile stretch of highway and traffic was backed up for miles
"I heard several bangs and booms behind me. I could tell it was a very nasty pileup," said a semi-truck driver who was in the middle of the multi-vehicle accident.
The 7 Action News team caught up with Sarah Koch who stopped her car and stayed behind the wheel as the destruction developed around her. She saw a man get out of his car, his wife was unconscious along with his kids.
"His face was bleeding, and I checked to see: 'Are you ok? Are you ok?' --obviously he was visibly distraught, but it was almost like he had no idea what was going on," said Koch. She then said many people got out of their vehicles to comfort him as emergency responders arrived.
The scene was also considered a HAZMAT Level 3 due to a fuel spill.
