Imperial restaurant in Ferndale offers L.A. style tacos and hot dogs with a California vibe

DETROIT (WXYZ) - There's a new restaurant in town by the name of Imperial and the executive chef stopped into 7 Action News.

The Ferndale restaurant offers a laid-back California vibe, focused on service L.A street tacos and hot dogs.

Prices range between $2.50 and $8 and the menu features many options including a vegetarian taco.

The executive chef was on hand in the studio to whip up one of the special recipes.

Pork belly al pastor w/pickled onion jalapeno relish and grilled pineapple:

 

Al Pastor Sauce:  

1 pineapple-peeled and cored

1 red onion

1/4 cup dried ground guijillo chilis

2 Tbsp dried ground ancho chilis

4 bay leaves

1/4 cup chipotle in adobo

2 Tbsp anchiote paste

2 Tbsp mexican oregano

1 Tbsp ground cumin

1 Tbsp ground coriander

1 cinnamon stick

5 cloves

3 all spice berries

1/2 cup brown sugar

1 cup pineapple juice

3 Tbsp salt

8 oz rice vinegar

 

1: Toast the cloves, all spice berry, cinnamon, cumin, and coriander in a pan till fragrant.  Grind in a spice grinder.

2: Combine all of the ingredients in a large bowl with spices, and blend in rounds.

3: When finished it should start a little sweet, and finish with a little heat.

 

Onion and Jalapeno Pickle:

1 red onion-sliced thin

4 jalapenos-sliced thin

2 tsp ground cumin

2 tsp ground coriander

1 Tbsp salt

1 Tbsp sugar

1/4 oz. lime juice

 

1: Toss all ingredients in a bowl and leave out at room temperature for 2 hours tossing every 15 minutes.
