Kwame Kilpatrick received $6700 from mom and friends corrections department says he failed to report

(WXYZ) - The Michigan Department of Corrections is investigating the $6700 that former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick received from his mom and friends. Emails between Kilpatrick and his parole officer show he received the money starting in 2011. His mother Carolyn Cheeks-Kilpatrick gave him $5,000 between August and December 2011.

Kilpatrick also wrote in an email to his parole officer that he received a check from former State Supreme Justice Conrad Mallet "sometime between June of 2012 and August 2012. The other $700 came from two individuals. But all the money, Kilpatrick says in the emails are for his wife and kids.

Kilpatrick points out to his parole officer that when he received the cash gifts he was under the supervision of the Texas corrections department, which did not require him to report cash gifts.

The ex-mayor owes about $850,000 in restitution to the City of Detroit as a result of his perjury conviction. Kilpatrick is awaiting a verdict on his federal trial. The jury has been deliberating since last week.

This is the second time that Kilpatrick has been under investigation for a possible parole violation. The first one stemmed from Kilpatrick collecting $2000 a Chicago pastor in December. That investigation resulted in Kilpatrick spending a weekend in jail and being placed on a tether. He is still on a tether and cannot return to Texas, where his wife and three children reside.

The emails also show that Kilpatrick has repeatedly begged his parole officer to allow him to return home stating on Feb. 2, "My wife and children love me very much. They truly miss me, and recognize that I am a profoundly positive force in their lives. I miss them and tuly love them as well. I want to be a present husband to my wife, and a much needed powerful presence for my 3 sons. PLEASE ALLOW ME TO GO HOME!"

Now, that Kilpatrick is awaiting a verdict in his federal case, he cannot be more than 20 minutes from the federal courthouse downtown, his emails state. He also writes that many of the attorneys in the case believe the jury will deliberate at least a couple week.

Kilpatrick, his father Bernard Kilpatrick, and his friend Bobby Ferguson are facing up to 20 years if convicted of racketeering or other charges.
