Detroit (WXYZ) - A second story balcony collapsed at an apartment complex in Detroit. Firefighters evacuated 80 people living at the complex at Rossiter and Morang on the east side.
The balcony was outside of Porsche Battle’s apartment. “You hear big old loud noise and the balcony is gone. I usually sit on the balcony when I wake up. I sit there almost all day that could have easily been me in that white chair.”
The balcony was made of concrete and steel. There is another balcony at the other end of the complex but it didn’t fall. Inspectors looked at the standing balcony and determined it was too weak.
Both buildings have been condemned. Residents were able to get inside to remove some of their items.
The man who owns the complex says he bought the place six months ago. He said he wasn’t sure about the buildings most recent inspections.
The city offered residents a place to stay but all of them are staying with relatives or friends.
