(WXYZ) Dallas, TX - She’s been Kwame Kilpatrick’s silent partner of sorts: his wife Carlita. Recently she opened up for the first time since her husband left office.
The last time we heard from Carlita Kilpatrick was the night her husband made a tearful apology to Detroit at the start of the text message scandal. Much has changed since that night in January 2008, and now Carlita is speaking out.
In an interview posted on BlackAmericaWeb.com , former mayor Kwame Kilparick and his wife opened up about the struggle to keep their marriage intact. When asked by host Deya Direct why she never left her husband after his affair with his former chief of staff, she said she didn’t really know.
"I’ve told Kwame I can’t really answer that," she said.
"I don’t know if there is an actual answer but for God and um, the faith that I have in our union. And just my belief in love," said the former first lady.
Her husband's answer was different. He said any discussions of divorce were quickly squashed by their oldest twin sons.
"We wouldn’t be sitting here but for them. Our big boys told us very early in this process that there’s no way we’re letting you get divorced. Came right to us in the room and said you can’t get divorced," he said.
It didn’t take long for the conversation to turn to Christine Beatty, Kilpatrick’s former lover and chief of staff. Kilpatrick said he no longer has the feelings for her that he once did.
"It started as a friendship, and then ended on the absolute wrong course. And of course I care about them and their children and I want them to be okay, but it’s not in a loving way that I want to be with her or I want to have her as my mate," he said.
Perhaps most surprising is the revelation that Carlita Kilpatrick has avoided reading the text-messages that almost crippled her marriage.
"I’ve not actually read them," she said.
"Whatever I’ve seen has been I guess what came on the news or whatever. Once I decided I was staying, there was no need to go through all of that. Why put myself through that," she asked.
