DETROIT (WXYZ) - Kwame Kilpatrick and his co-defendants have until May 10 to ask the court for a new trial.
A jury convicted Detroit’s former mayor and his friend, Bobby Ferguson, on racketeering, extortion, and bribery charges, and the two could be facing decades in federal prison.
The jury was hung on whether Kilpatrick’s father, Bernard, was part of the Kilpatrick Enterprise, an essential element of the RICO count. Bernard Kilpatrick was convicted of a tax crime.
Kilpatrick’s lawyer, Jim Thomas, told reporters on Monday after the jury’s decision that they will appeal.
Both Kilpatrick and Ferguson were taken into federal custody Monday. They are awaiting sentencing inside the Milan Federal Correctional facility.
