DETROIT (WXYZ) - Bernard Kilpatrick, 71, is the father of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, and has been charged with extortion, bribery and racketeering.

Investigators allege that the senior Kilpatrick, through his consulting company Maestro Associates LLC, collected fees, loans or favors -- like private jet trips to Las Vegas and other high-end perks and cash -- from companies doing business with the city.

Court records say that witnesses told federal investigators that they felt if they did not hire Bernard Kilpatrick’s consulting company, they would either lose their city contact or would be denied any future work with the city.

Bernard Kilpatrick is also accused of pocketing hundreds of thousands in cash and perks, along with his son, and failing t report $185,961 to the Internal Revenue Service.

In February 2012, outside a church in Detroit, Bernard Kilpatrick told 7 Action News that, “Anybody who testifies against me is a crook and shouldn’t be trusted.”
