DETROIT (WXYZ) - The issue of control over the Detroit Public School system will not be on the ballot this November. Detroit city council members voted against the idea Thursday afternoon.

The issue has been a controversial one between Mayor Bing and the city council. The question voters could have seen on the ballot was, “Do you favor a change in the way the school district is governed?”

The proposal failed 6-3.

The law department has advised council that many of these questions they should not be voting on. After four weeks of controversy council concluded neither the Mayor nor council should run the district. Adding, that the question was rejected by voters when they defeated Proposal E during the Kilpatrick administration.

Mayor Bing issued this statement following the vote, "Council’s vote is a loss for the students, parents and supporters of our schools. It’s unfortunate that the Council has chosen to deny voters the opportunity to decide for themselves what kind of school system and accountability best serves our children. Our schools and our
kids deserve better."
