EVANSTON, Wyo. (WXYZ) - Nearly $1.7 million of Detroit-bound marijuana was seized during a traffic stop in Evanston, Wyoming, Tuesday.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol reports 242 pounds of high grade marijuana was discovered in the trunks of two cars hauled by a tractor trailer Tuesday morning.

The load, with an estimated street value of $1,695,400.00 is believed to have originated in California and was destined for delivery in the Detroit area.

Police discovered the drugs during a traffic stop roughly 9 miles east of Evanston, Wyoming on Interstate 80. It was a routine inspection that allowed authorities to discover an extra vehicle loaded on the trailer.

Further inspection and the deployment of a K-9 unit resulted in the discovery of 139 pounds of marijuana in the truck of one car. 109 additional pounds were found in the trunk of a second vehicle.

The 50-year-old driver, Hazem Izzat was arrested and charged with felony possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.
