FENTON, Mich. (WXYZ) - A dangerous fall through the ice sent a man scrambling for his life and neighbors rushing to his rescue.
More than a week after falling on Runyon Lake in Fenton through the ice, Dennis Charette is still nursing his frost bitten fingers with warm wax.
He knew the ice was thin, but his beloved 130-pound Newfoundland Bella had run out and fallen through.
He saved bella all right, but then he had to be saved.
Some nearby people dialed 911. Six-year-old Abbie started running and yelling.
T.J. grabbed his canoe. The only trouble was he had to walk it on the ice before he could get close to Dennis.
Fenton firefighters had an arsenal of life-saving equipment, but only a short time to use any of it.
Bella is staying with friends while Dennis recovers.
