WXYZ - A memorial vigil will take place tonight to remember the men, women and children who died in the crash of Northwest Flight 255. The vigil will take place at the crash site at Middlebelt Road and I-94 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
The plane went down on August 16, 1987 with 156 people on board. Two people on the ground also died in the crash. There was only one survivor, a 4-year-old girl named Cecelia Cichan. She was raised by relatives after the crash and shielded from the public.
Eighteen of the passengers on board were from Michigan, most were from Arizona.
The National Transportation Safety Board ruled the probable cause of the crash was the flight crew's failure to use the taxi checklist to make sure the flaps and slates were extended before takeoff. Flight 255 took off from Metro Airport at 8:45 p.m. that night and began to stall then roll before crashing one minute later into the railroad overpass of eastbound I-94.
