ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WXYZ) - Depending on who you talk to, it may be the most heralded and storied rivalry in all of sports - the University of Michigan Wolverines vs. the Ohio State Buckeyes.
And it's time for the teams to face off again!
Known to fans as "The Game", this will be the 108th time the two schools have met. According to a write up in the Alumni and Friends section of the University of Michigan's College of Literature, Science and the Arts website , the animosity surrounding the annual contest can be traced back to the war over Toledo.
While that fight ended with Ohio keeping Toledo and Michigan becoming a state (and getting the Upper Peninsula), hostilities between the two states have been simmering ever since.
Things hit the football field in 1897 and really cranked up in 1918 when both schools were finally facing off in the Big Ten.
However, two more things needed to happen before the game became The Game and ESPN's greatest rivalry of all time. The first happened in 1935 when the Big Ten began scheduling it as the last game of the year because of the growing rivalry between the two schools.
The other happened in 1969 when Woody Hayes faced off against Bo Schembechler, his former assistant, and began the Ten Year War.
Now The Game is the subject of much debate, with the Governors of both Ohio and Michigan betting each other over who will win. It is a little personal for both men as Rick Snyder went to Michigan and John Kasich went to Ohio State.
So, what's on the line? Snyder has bet a Michigan cherry pie and Kasich has bet a chocolate and peanut butter “Buckeye” pie.
The students also get in on the rivalry fun, as three members of the University of Michigan glee club did when the launched, what they called, "Operation: Hail." Their mission: to sing The Victors on the campus of Ohio State.
You can see the results in the video player below.
Game time is high noon in Ann Arbor.
