(WXYZ) - President Barack Obama's interview with ABC News' Robin Roberts in which he announced he now supports same-sex marriage is generating a lot of buzz online.

In addition to quickly becoming a trending topic on Twitter, people are leaving comments responding to the development on our Facebook page .

Here is a sampling of what they are saying:

R D Ruppert Took guts to take this stand. He has my vote.

Carole Coffman only because it is election year

Wendy Weldon he has a right to be wrong

Gina Marie If they aren't harming anyone else, who's business is it who anyone marries?!

Georgette Heron-Willoughby I'm so glad that he finally acknowledged loving unions to all CITIZENS of this country. Marriage is a bond between two people who love each other and it shouldn't be about what your religion thinks. It's a civil union that is registered & recognized by the GOVERNMENT.

Michelle Sanders Sabin Its getting so close to election time that he's trying to get votes from where ever he can. He has hurt our country more in the last 4 years than I think any other president has. I VOTE NO OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Beth Seward Stockdale Marriage is a legal contract. Why shouldn't same sex marriage be allowed? Leave it up to the churches to decide if they want to sanctify any ceremonies, but as far as filing the contract w/ the city/county/whatever? It's a legal contract b/w 2 consenting adults. Why not?!

Celeste Rodriguez-Fick There should not be marriage at all, only civil unions. Then after that if you want to get married you can do it in a church of your choice. Now if we can only repeal doma

Brett Barager I know it's inevitable, but I'm not sure I'm ready for it. I'm OK with calling it a legal "union" & similar benefits... but I still think Marriage is between a Man & a Woman. I'm not a hater, just the way I feel.

Carl Varcie Why do gay people want to get married so badly in the first place? To receive Government benefits. Seriously, that would be the only difference they would experience from domestic partnership to marriage. Oh, and a different tax situation.

Pamela Van Fleteren Fox Calling it a "marriage" does not make it so...sorry.
