It’s the middle of March and the huge job of counting every person living in America is well under way! The 2010 Census questionnaire is being mailed to your home and should arrive next week. Once you get the form, it’s imperative you fill it out and send it back. The official Census Day is April 1st.
This year’s Census form is shorter than ever before. There are only 10 questions that will take you about 10 minutes to answer. And it is completely confidential! For Michigan, there has never been a more important count! At stake are two critical issues; our fair share of about $400 billion of federal government funding and our representation in Congress. Many experts are predicting Michigan will lose one of its 15 seats in the U.S. House due to a drop in population caused by the loss of jobs. That’s why your participation is so critical. An undercount and the loss of two seats would be even more devastating to the state.
One of the biggest threats to an undercount is seasonal residents, better known as “snowbirds”, not filling out their Census form accurately. So it is vital that family and friends help get the word out. If you have a permanent residence in Michigan, if Michigan is where you spend the largest portion of the year, then Michigan is where you need to be counted. Our state cannot afford to forfeit hundreds of millions of dollars of government funding. So act now and by doing so you will help to protect the future of Michigan’s economy!
