WXYZ-TV Detroit - Prop. C - Revised Detroit Charter - VOTE YES!

Delivered by Chuck Stokes, Editorial Director

Proposal C is not a perfect document! But on balance, it is a big improvement over the current Detroit Charter. On Tuesday, November 8th, vote YES to enforce a majority council-by-district system. Vote YES for stronger ethics and better government!

Opposition to the revised Charter ranges from well meaning concerns to political knit-picking! Citizens for Detroit's Future, led by former Mayoral candidate Tom Barrow, claim Detroiters will lose control of the pension board and water system. City Council President Charles Pugh believes that the proposed Charter doesn't give council members enough power over department heads who deliver city services. None of these "Johnny-come-lately" excuses should stop this timely and important ballot proposal. For nearly two years, the Charter revision commission conducted extremely open and transparent meetings all across the city. They took in nearly 600 recommendations from citizens. The time for objections has come and gone.

The revised Detroit Charter will create real neighborhood representation, put teeth into an aggressive ethics ordinance, and establish an Office of the Inspector General.

The revised Detroit City Charter isn't perfect but it's a major step forward that gives Detroiters more empowerment and responsible government. Channel 7 urges a YES vote on Proposal C!
