WALLED LAKE, Mich (WXYZ) - Police have arrested the barricaded gunman that caused several Walled Lake schools to lock down.
It all started around 7:30 a.m. Thursday. Police say the man just started shooting out of the condo where he was staying with his mom.
St. Williams Catholic School, Hickory Wood Elementary, Walled Lake Elementary and Guest Elementary locked down after reports of shots fired at the nearby Winwood Place condominium complex in the area of Leon and and Walled Lake Drive.
Numerous police departments responded. An investigator from the Commerce Police Department got on the phone with the gunman and made an effort to convince him to surrender. At some point the man told police he needed to take a shower first.
The man's mother was in the home, and worked with police to let them know what was happening.
It is believed the man took a shower before turning himself in.
Police say the man was very drunk. As he walked out of the house to turn himself in, he fell on the ice and hit his head. They arrested him.
Police are not yet releasing the man's identity, but say he is 42 years old. His mother told investigators he is a veteran, a heavy drinker, and had fallen on tough times.
