The battle to win Michigan’s new Right to Work law appears to have taken a big toll on Governor Rick Snyder’s popularity.
In a brand new EPIC-MRA poll released first to WXYZ and the Detroit Free Press, 61 percent of those surveyed now give the Governor a negative job rating. Only 36 percent believe Governor Snyder is doing a good job and 3-percent are undecided.
That compares to December of last year, when 48 percent gave the Governor a negative job rating and 51 percent approved of what he was doing.
His favorability has also suffered. Forty-two percent like Governor Snyder, 46 percent don’t like him.
Two months ago, Michigan voters gave the Governor a 55 percent favorability rating and a 32 percent unfavorable rating.
When asked their opinion about the controversial new measure that makes Michigan the 24th state to adopt a Right to Work Law, a bare majority of 50 percent now oppose it. Forty-five percent favor the new law, and 5 percent are undecided. In December, 47 percent supported right to work legislation, 46 percent opposed it.
WXYZ pollster Bernie Porn, says there has been a major shift among Democrats, Independents, and some Republican women.
And as President Barack Obama gets ready to deliver his first State of the Union Address of his second term in office, his favorability stands at 55 percent. Forty-two percent are not fond of the President and 3 percent haven’t made up their minds about him.
Michigan voters are split on the President’s job performance. Half (50 percent) give him poor marks, 49 percent give a good grade, 1 percent are undecided.
The survey of 600 likely Michigan voters was conducted February 5 – 10 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.0 percent.

In the recent December lame-duck session of the Michigan Legislature, a new law was enacted to make Michigan the 24th state with a Right to Work law. The Right to Work law allows employees who work at unionized workplaces to decide whether or not they want to pay the union dues or fees for union representation. If they decide not to pay, they will still be able to collect the same pay and benefits negotiated by the union that dues paying members receive, and the union must also still represent them as if they were union members. Knowing this, let me ask you again, do you favor or oppose the decision by the Michigan Legislature and Governor Snyder to make Michigan a “Right to Work” state?
Favor – 45%
Oppose – 50%
Undecided – 5%
