(WXYZ) - Right now in Michigan, a simple majority vote allows lawmakers to raise taxes. Proposal 5 would change that if approved.
It would change Michigan's constitution. It would force lawmakers to achieve support from 2/3 of the legislature, or put a vote before the public before raising taxes.
Supporters say it would force lawmakers to be more efficient and keep taxes low.
Opponents say it would take away flexibility lawmakers may need should there be an emergency need for more tax income. They say it would also make it more difficult to reform Michigan's tax structure, even without an overall increase in taxes.
