(WXYZ) - In a year that challenged Michigan economically and politically, one story was overwhelmingly positive!

2011 was an unforgettable season for Detroit Tigers’ All-star pitcher Justin Verlander. He tossed the second no-hitter of his career, and captured the American League’s Cy Young and MVP Awards.

Now he has another prestigious award he can add to his trophy case. Verlander has been selected to be the  2011 WXYZ Newsmaker of the Year.

Channel 7 Editorial Director Chuck Stokes sat down with Verlander recently for an in-depth Spotlight on the News interview. Verlander’s on-the-field accomplishments have made him a sought after celebrity across the nation.  From TV network talk shows to high-profile speeches, Verlander tells WXYZ.com what it means to be one of Detroit’s most recognizable ambassadors.

Justin Verlander is best known for using his fingers to toss 103 mph fast balls but he also likes using them to tweet messages to friends and fans.

You can see the entire Justin Verlander “Newsmaker of the Year” interview this Sunday morning at 9:30 on Spotlight on the News with Chuck Stokes. It’s a candid conversation where the Tigers’ ace pitcher talks about his family, role models, superstitions, and his goals.
