DETROIT (WXYZ) - An 11-year-old boy is recovering in the hospital after taking his family's van for a joyride.

Courtney Morrison woke up at 3:00 a.m. like she does every day to pray. She was on her front porch when she saw the van careern off Spinoza Rd. near Joy Rd, roll three times and then wrap around a utility. pole.

Police believe the boy was going at least 90 miles an hour before he lost control.

Before emergency crews arrived, Morrison ran to help the boy. She said the child was in shock, and was trying to get out, but he was pinned in the van with the pole stuck between his legs. "He said, "I was a very bad boy. I stole my mother’s car.  And my mother’s going to be so mad at me."

Despite EMS crews needing to use the Jaws of Life to remove the child from the crashed vehicle, and transporting him to the hospital, he is expected to be OK.

At this time no charges have been filed in the case.
