Chester Logan named interim Detroit Police Chief as Ralph Godbee departs amid sex scandal

DETROIT (WXYZ) - Chester Logan, a 38-year Detroit Police Department veteran, will become the department's interim chief. Mayor Bing made the announcement Monday while telling reporters that Ralph Godbee retired amid a sex scandal.

Logan held the role of Assistant Chief. Last week, it was announced that he would assume the role of Detroit Police Chief during a 30-day suspension of Ralph Godbee.

At a press conference today, Logan praised Godbee for his leadership of the department, but he said, "There is much more that needs to be done."

"I'm humbled. I'm honored," said the new interim chief. "I'm ready to roll up my sleeves. I'll start today," he said.

An executive search firm will be used to find a permanent replacement for the police chief, the mayor said today. The next chief will be appointed by the mayor, but will be subject to the approval of Detroit City Council.

Last Tuesday, Bing announced  that Chief Godbee would be suspended for thirty days during an investigation of a relationship he is alleged to have had with Angelica Robinson, a Detroit police officer.

Chester Logan is a longtime member of Detroit's police force who has served in high-ranking positions for a number of years.

In a biography he posted for a Detroit City Council run ten years ago, Logan noted that he is a father of four and a Vietnam Veteran.

He holds a Bachelors Degree from Madonna University and a Masters Degree from Eastern Michigan University.
