Detroit Mayor Dave Bing announces public safety plan involving police mini stations

DETROIT (WXYZ) - Detroit Mayor Dave Bing is implementing a plan to put more police into the neighborhoods by re-opening 13 police mini stations by the end of March.

At the same time, the mayor is facing a new wave of violent crime, a possible recall, financial issues with the city council and an election next year.

The Butzel Family Center is where one of the mini-stations is already open. It is also where  where the mayor held his news conference Wednesday morning.

The mini stations will have a sworn officer, a volunteer reserve officer and a third community volunteer. 

They will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

This comes just days after a recall effort against Mayor Bing became known over public safety.

The mayor says he has not decided if he is running for re-election next year. He says the mini stations have nothing to do with that recall.

Six mini stations are open now, two more will be open by the end of the month and five more will be added by March.

Mayor Bing says this will increase police presence in Detroit neighborhoods.

The mayor also says the mini stations will get the community involved and engaged and give residents a better sense of security.

The mini station concept starts today.
