DETROIT (WXYZ) - Every single year, for the past twenty-three years, volunteers have gathered in Detroit on Christmas to help the organization Jimmy’s Kids.
They then deliver those gifts to hundreds of children in need.
This morning, they delivered gifts to about 800 families in southwest Detroit.
They braved icy roads and sidewalks carrying bags of toys.
In most cases, they arrived to quiet homes. On Christmas, there is no point waking up early, if there are no presents under the tree.
At many homes, parents could not understand volunteers, due to a language barrier.
It is a barrier that on Christmas is easily overcome.
“No matter your language, presents are presents. Smiles are smiles. Hugs are hugs,” said volunteer Beverly Meyers.
The actions of Christmas, she found, provided a universal language.
