DETROIT (WXYZ) - Robert Bobb says his controversial plan to turn 41 schools into charter schools is the only way to keep those schools open.
Opponents disagree. They say that the plan will bring in outsiders who care about money, not the kids.
Right now there are nine so called Detroit Public School’s authorized charters. However, charter school critics are afraid the new ones would be run by outside entities.
Many were on hand when Robert Bobb touted his proposal. He says it would save $75 million in operating costs while collecting $22 million for leasing them.
Proponents of the plan say that the other schools that may become charters will continue to get support from DPS but they will also be subject to oversight.
