DETROIT, Mich. (WXYZ) - A Canadian sports writer said the Edmonton Oilers were coming to a city where the forecast was muggy with a chance of murder and where they use more white chalk at crimes scenes than in the schools.
"Stupid and ridiculous" said broadcaster Mickey Redmond after hearing about what Robert Tychkowski of the Edmonton Sun newspaper wrote before the game. "A cheap shot" said a fan.
Tychkowski says it was a throw away line and not totally inaccurate and what he meant was the Oilers should be wary of coming here, not because of crime but because the Red Wings are a good team. He said it was just an illustration.
It hit a nerve though with fans and other reporters because Tychkowski says he received about 80 emails from people who were upset with what he said.
He told Action News he probably won't be making that kind of analogy again.
