DETROIT (WXYZ) - A new era begins at General Motors today. Former Telecom executive, Daniel Akerson, officially begins his duties as the automaker's new CEO.

Akerson replaces Ed Whitacre Jr., who announced last month he was stepping down.

Akerson becomes the fourth chief executive for GM in just the past two years.

The 61-year-old will have to hit the ground running as General Motors gets ready for an initial public stock offering later this year.
