Grenades dropped off at police station, prompts brief evacuation of department

DETROIT (WXYZ) - The Detroit Fire Department and Bomb Squad were on the scene of the Eastern District Police Department after someone dropped off grenades at the station.
The department was evacuated for a brief time. A member of the Bomb Squad removed a bag from just outside the station. The officer placed the bag in an explosive-safe device and drove it away from the scene.
The police station is located near Gratiot and Outer Drive.
According to police, a family was cleaning out the home of their recently deceased father and found two grenades. They took the renades to the Eastern District police station. They are checking the home now for any additional explosives. The man who died was a World War II veteran.
Detroit Mayor Dave Bing sent out a tweet on Twitter asking people to avoid the Eastern District police station. If residents need assistance, the Mayor is advising citizens to go to the Northeast District located at 5100 East Nevada Street, or the Central District police station located at 7300 Woodward.
