DETROIT (WXYZ) - Emotional family members gathered for a vigil at the home of a 8-year-old girl who was stabbed to death last Sunday.
The girl's mother is under arrest in connection with the killing.
Family members sobbed and pleaded for understanding, saying 8-year-old Tameria Greene's mother was the victim of domestic violence and the "system" failed to help her.
Eight-year-old Tameria's grandmother tells 7 Action News she last saw and talked to her granddaughter on Christmas, saying Tameria said it was the best Christmas she ever had.
The little girl was stabbed once in the chest early Sunday morning inside her home on the 2200-block of E. Larned in Detroit.
Police sources tell 7 Action News it happened after her mother got into a fight with her boyfriend. The mother, Semeria Greene, is suspected to have committed the crime.
Investigative sources also tell 7 Action News that little Tameria was neglected and often cared for her four younger brothers. We're told by sources the kids would frequently be left alone for multiple hours - Child Protective Services had at least one open case dealing with the family.
The other children are currently in protective custody. Family members on the children's father's side are attempting to gain legal guardianship for the children.
