DETROIT (WXYZ) - Detroit's old Michigan Theatre building is for sale. If the name alone doesn't help you picture it, you may know it better as the once-beautiful old theater that was turned into a parking garage and was the scene of rap battles in the film '8 Mile.'
The building is located at Bagley and Cass in downtown Detroit. The theater portion of the building is also attached to an office tower. Altogether, the 245,000 square foot space is listed with a $3 million price tag.
The sale was reported Friday by the real estate blog Curbed Detroit. A listing on the commercial real estate site LoopNet appears to have been created last month.
The listing for the building provides this description:
"The Michigan Building is an office building and former theatre in downtown Detroit, Michigan. It was constructed in 1925 and stands at 13 floors in height. It contains retail space, offices, and a unique and ornate parking garage that once served as a historic theatre."
The parking garage provided the perfect background for rap battles featuring Eminem in the 2002 film '8 Mile.' Its ornate high ceilings - full of crumbling plaster work - are an odd sight when paired with cars parked below.
The building is listed on the website of Luke Investments who also lists two other prominent downtown Detroit buildings for sale: The Detroit Free Press Building and the David Stott Building.
