DETROIT (WXYZ) - Just as all of metro Detroit has banded together to celebrate a successful baseball team and a football team with promise , along comes yet another list to bring us down.
Forbes has released their list of “ America’s Most Dangerous Cities .” They’ve named metro Detroit to the number one most dangerous spot.
They say the list was made after analyzing FBI statistics that looked at four types of violent crime. In their online article, particular attention is paid to murder rates.
As many in our area know, the Detroit area often finds itself on lists of this sort that are put together to garner the attention of a web audience that increasingly favors quick top ten lists. Publishers often seem to create lists of the best and worst places to live, the most and least healthy cities, the best dressed, the the worst dressed, and on and on.
Sometimes these lists do not rely on the most detailed statistical analyses.
Forbes writer John Giuffo even says in his piece, “The FBI warns against simplistic analyses of its local crime data because the factors affecting crime rates are so complex and vary by area.”
Still, Forbes has put out a list that forces web users to traverse a large ad-filled slideshow in order to determine which other areas are on the dreaded “Most Dangerous” list.
We will spare you the effort. Memphis, TN and Springfield, IL are placed in the number two and three positions on the list, respectively. Flint, Michigan is at number four.
The Forbes report claims to have analyzed crime data not just in the city of Detroit, but in the surrounding “metropolitan statistical area” as well.
The same Forbes author has also recently written articles listing, "The World’s Most Beautiful Rivers," "America’s Prettiest Neighborhoods," "The World’s Most Shark-Infested Beaches," and "America’s Best Hot Dogs." His top ten hot dog listing does not include a single Detroit coney dog.
