(Detroit-WXYZ) - It is estimated that 1.2 million Americans have HIV, and about 1 in 5 don’t know it.
The National Association of People with Aids aims to make all those who are infected aware. That is why it has made June 27 th, National HIV Testing Day.
The Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion is observing the day. It will host an information and testing day from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at DHWP. There will be free HIV and Syphilis tests, give-a-ways, and entertainment.
Organizers say if you have HIV, you need to know so you can get medical care and prevent the spread of the infection to others.
DHWP will also have its mobile unit at the Walgreens at 5331 E. Jefferson through Friday between the hours of 3 and 7 p.m. You can get a free HIV test there.
"The epicenter of HIV disease in Michigan is in the city of Detroit," said Loretta Davis, Director of DHWP in a press release. "National HIV Testing Day is a wonderful opportunity for the residents of Detroit to become aware of their status and to participate in the prevention of HIV transmission."
