DETROIT, Mich. (WXYZ) - 29-year-old Vernithea McCrary was a great friend who always had a smile, says longtime friend Steve Shelton. He says he was shocked when he found out Vernithea was one of the women whose burned body was found in the trunk of a torched car on Christmas Day.
Vernithea was just identified on Thursday through dental records, the medical examiner is still trying to positively identify the second woman found in that trunk.
The gruesome and disturbing discovery came just days after the bodies of two cousins were found in the trunk of a car left between two vacant homes.
Police believe and are worried the crimes are connected because investigators say three of the four women had escort profiles on a website called backpage.com.
Vernithea's mom told us she barely has the heart to tell her 7-year-old grandaughter her mom won't be coming home. Vernithea also had a toddler and a 7-month-old baby.
"My head is messed up over this", said friend Ricky Woods and he said his thoughts and prayers go out to the family.
