DETROIT (WXYZ) - Detroit Public Schools is advancing its new education curriculum by assigning some students homework 2 weeks before the start of classes.
About 28,650 students in grades 3 through 8 will get educational activity booklets that must be turned in for credit on the first day of classes, which begin September 7.
The assignments are being mailed to students' homes as part of a back-to-school packet.
The packets will also include immunization paperwork, class schedules and free and reduced lunch program information.
The district says passing the homework out before the start of classes will help ensure that learning is already underway.
The 62-page "Field Trip Detroit" books contain literacy exercises specific to each grade level, as well as puzzles and word search activities.
DPS teachers are expected to use the workbooks during their first lessons.
