DETROIT (WXYZ) - As Hurricane Sandy looms, thousands of flights are being canceled across the country, including many in Detroit.

Several airlines including American, Delta, Southwest and United are hoping to be a step ahead of the storm by canceling flights to and from the eastern part of the country.

Airline employees urge all travelers to consistently check the status of flights. Some flights that are not heading east have also been delayed or canceled due to the storm.

Also be sure to plan ahead because phone lines and airport lines will be busier than normal.
