DETROIT (WXYZ) - Westbound I-96 is back open near Joy Road in Detroit after being shut down early this morning because of a fatal accident.
Police say two 22-year-old men were in a car that was traveling on the freeway when the driver lost control. The car went up the embankment and through a group of trees before rolling back down the embankment, ending up on the freeway again.
The passenger was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene. The driver was taken to Henry For hospital in Detroit.
Police say neither man was wearing a seatbelt and alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash.
However, the accident remains under investigation.
Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the Michigan State Police Metro Post at (248) 584-5740.
