DETROIT (WXYZ) - Nneka Cheeks isn't ready to move forward with her criminal case just yet because she has hired a new lawyer to represent her.

Cheeks, cousin to former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, was scheduled to have her preliminary exam Tuesday on multiple counts of embezzlement but asked for another adjournment so her new lawyer could get familiar with her case before they proceed.

Judge Willie Lipscomb, Jr. granted the defense's adjournment request but was not pleased because this is now the second lengthy delay.

In court, Lipscomb told Cheeks, "If your lawyer cannot be ready to go on this next date, you need to get another lawyer."

While her cousin was Mayor, Cheeks allegedly embezzled thousands of dollars from the Manoogian Mansion Restoration Society.

Lawyers with the Michigan Attorney General's Office claim Cheeks misused the money to pay for everything from diamond jewelry and veterinary services to her own wedding reception and cosmetic injections.

The preliminary exam has been rescheduled for August 19.
