DETROIT (WXYZ) -
The Federal trial of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and three others is not the first time the feds have prosecuted people inside city hall.
Council Member Monica Conyers and her chief of staff Sam Riddle pleaded guilty to taking bribes in 2010. Riddle is back in Detroit and, for now, keeping a low profile.
He is living in a halfway house and is allowed to check out to work, run errands and work out almost daily at the downtown Detroit YMCA.
"I've known Sam Riddle for more than 20 years before he became public figure here in Detroit. He's a political consultant, crisis manager, activist and convicted felon," says 7 Action News reporter Jim Kiertzner.
He's wasting no time making his voice heard.
Riddle says, "I can tell you something right now. Today in Detroit, I wear my "prisondom" with honor."
Riddle tells 7 Action News he recently came in contact with Kwame Kilpatrick on the former mayor's way to federal court.
"Kwame Kilpatrick and Sam Riddle just happened to meet by serendipity on a Detroit street not far from the federal court house.," recounts Tracey Martin who witnessed it. "What are the chances of that?"
Riddle was in the same situation on trial just 2 and 1/2 years ago. "The mayor hollered at Sam and they gave each other the guy hug," Martin says.
Conyers continues her federal prison sentence and is due out next year.
Riddle was also convicted of pulling a shotgun on his longtime friend Mary Waters when she caught him in bed in her house with a younger woman. Waters declined to comment to 7 Action News for this report.
