DETROIT (WXYZ) - A discussion on the light rail system to be built along Woodward will take center stage in Detroit Tuesday.
Supporters hope construction could begin this fall and so the group Transportation Riders United--known as TRU --will meet Tuesday to discuss the latest on the project and ways people can help when it comes to building what they call critical community support for the light rail project.
TRU is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving transportation access and mobility in greater Detroit
Just days ago, US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced a $25 million federal grant for the first phase of the project.
The first phase of the Woodward Aventue light rail project is a 3.4 mile stretch from Hart Plaza to the New Center Area.
Backers say it would create jobs and stimulate long-term economic growth.
The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. at the MSU Detroit Center on Woodward, south of Mack.
The federal funds are earmarked for road rehabilitation, landscaping, and the purchase of rail cars.
