DETROIT (WXYZ) - Detroit police say a prisoner is back in custody after trying to escape from a hospital room.

It happened at St. John Hospital on the city's east side.

Officers say the man tried to climb through the ceiling after asking to use the bathroom.

Police say he tried to escape by crawling through the ceiling. He was found sandwiched between two walls and needed help to get out.

Commander Steve Dolunt tells 7 Action News he went up into the ceiling and found the prisoner.

He looked down between two walls and saw some insulation. He used a crutch to lift it up and that's when he saw the prisoner below.

The prisoner asked for the crutch and Dolunt says he helped lift him out.

The man was being treated at the hospital after being shot by officers during an incident on Tuesday.

Investigators say the prisoner is being evaluated to make sure he wasn't injured during his attempted escape.

He is expected to face more criminal charges.

St. John Hospital has released the following statement about the incident:

Earlier today a patient at St. John Hospital that was in custody of the Detroit Police department attempted to escape through the ceiling of the bathroom in his room. The patient became stuck in the wall between the bathroom and his room. He was quickly located and apprehended by Detroit Police and St. John Hospital security.

At no time were patients , visitors or associates at the hospital in danger.
