DETROIT, Mich. (WXYZ) - The Michigan State Police have confirmed that two Ontario step-siblings, a 7-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl, were among those killed in a massive pileup on I-75 in southwest Detroit Thursday morning.
The 9-year-old’s sister was also reportedly in the vehicle. The children are part of a blended family.
State police say two of the children’s parents were rushed to the hospital. The pair was reportedly in the front seat of the black Mazda that was badly crushed in the accident.
Lori Laing says she is shocked and saddened to learn that the deadly multi-vehicle crash took the life of the 9-year-old girl who lives next door, and critically injured her sister.
From her home just outside of Amherstburg, Lori says she can picture the girls playing outside on the trampoline and in the snow. She says they loved to dance and were beautiful, talented and fun.
The third fatality in the multi-vehicle accident was a 54-year-old man from Allen Park, according to family members.
Many victims of the massive pileup on I-75 have been taken to local hospitals to be treated for injuries. One child was taken to Children's Hospital and seven other people from the crash were taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital.
The most critical patient from the group was an adult who had surgery for head trauma and bleeding in the brain. Doctors took that person into the operating room sometime around 5 p.m. No word yet on how that surgery went.
Two people in serious condition came to the hospital with facial trauma and a third person in serious condition had pelvic trauma. Two other adults were listed in fair condition.
One other person was treated and released.
We know that two people taken to Henry Ford Hospital were treated and released earlier on Thursday. Both Detroit Receiving and Children’s Hospital say the next update they will have on the people being treated there is in the morning.
