DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit woman accused of stabbing her 8-year-old daughter to death has been found incompetent to stand trial.

However, Semeria Greene will now undergo an independent psychiatric evaluation to determine her competency at the request of the prosecution.

The ruling came during a hearing that was being held to get an update on Green's mental health. The judge also set a competency exam for May 29.

The judge declined to send Greene to a mental hospital, deciding instead to send her to psych section of the Wayne County Jail.

The case has received much attention because child welfare officials wanted to remove the girl and her siblings from their home but were turned down by court officials in November.

Semeria Greene was charged with first-degree murder in January, but the case has been on hold while her mental competency is evaluated.

Greene's daughter, Tameria, was fatally stabbed on Dec. 30. The girl's 4-year-old brother told authorities that he witnessed it.

The Michigan Department of Human Services is investigating how its caseworkers responded to allegations of abuse.
