New report lists best hospitals for emergency care

(WXYZ) - When you need to take a loved one to the emergency room, researchers say choosing the right hospital can make a big difference.
HealthGrades studied the mortality rates for more than 4,000 hospitals nationwide for 12 medical emergency conditions: bowel obstruction, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetic acidosis coma, gastrointestinal bleed, heart attack, heart failure, pancreatitis, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, respiratory failure, sepsis and stroke.
Hospitals in the top 5 percent had a 41.7% lower mortality rate than the rest of the hospitals studied.
Overall, the Detroit area ranked tenth on the list in terms of the number of hospitals ranked for excellent emergency care. Chicago was first.
The hospitals in Metro Detroit that received HealthGrades' "Emergency Medicine Excellence Award" are:
- Beaumont Hospital in Troy
- Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital
- Huron Valley - Sinai Hospital
- Lapeer Regional Medical Center
- Mount Clemens Regional Medical Center
- Providence Hospital in Southfield
- St. John Macomb - Oakland Hospital in Warren
- St. John Macomb - Oakland Hospital in Madison Heights
- St. Mary Mercy Hospital in Livonia
