DETROIT (WXYZ) - The parents of slain Florida teen Trayvon Martin were honored at a banquet in the Renaissance Center Sunday night.
Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin were lauded for their creation of a foundation in their fallen son’s honor.
Before the event began, Fulton and Martin talked about how difficult it’s been during the holidays without their son.
It was back in February of this year that Trayvon was gunned down by George Zimmerman in a Florida neighborhood. Zimmerman claims the unarmed teen was behaving suspiciously.
As the trial looms both sides have been attacking the other – the latest jabs coming a few days ago when Zimmerman was criticized for offering to send signed thank you notes for anyone who donates money to his defense fund.
When Action News asked the Martin family attorney about Zimmerman’s plans to incentivize donations he would only say it was the family’s intention to stay positive and offered no further comment.
According to ABC News Zimmerman remains in hiding in Seminole County, Florida. ABC News also reports Zimmerman’s defense fund, which topped out at $200,000, is dwindling.
