DETROIT (AP) - Detroit police say a 24-year-old man was fatally shot during a robbery attempt on the city's northwest side.

Police say the man who died was sitting in a pickup truck about 1:50 a.m. Friday with a 21-year-old woman when they were approached by the suspect.

Police say the suspect forced the man out of the truck and shot him during a struggle. The woman wasn't injured. The suspect fled.

On Thursday, Mayor Dave Bing announced that criminal homicides accounted for 386 of the 461 death investigations in the city in 2012. That was 42 more than the year before, an increase of about 12 percent.

On Friday, Bing told radio station WWJ that additional law enforcement help for the city from the Michigan State Police "would be helpful."
