DETROIT (WXYZ) - The mother of two boys who were found home alone has finally come forward.

We're told the woman contacted police just after midnight. Detroit Police say a relative originally came forward to identify the mother of two young boys. The children are only 3-years-old and 13-months-old.

Police tell 7 Action News that the boys have been placed with their grandmother during their investigation or until a hearing takes place to determine where to place the boys. 7 Action News spoke to the sister of the mother off camera and she did tell us that the boys are doing just fine today.

It's not clear why or for how long the boys were left home alone.

The situation began when police were called to an apartment complex on the 3200 block of Rochester regarding "children left home alone" around 5:30 pm Monday.

A neighbor at the Christian Manor Apartments on the city's west side says she heard the boys calling for their mother for a half hour and called 911.

Upon arrival, officers found the two young boys in the courtyard of the apartment complex without adult supervision. They say the boys wandered out of their apartment in search of their mother.

The older boy was wearing a coat, the younger one was without a coat or shoes.

Both children were placed in the care of the Detroit Police Child Abuse Unit. They have since been placed in the care of a relative.

It's not yet clear what charges, if any, the mother will face.  She could face neglect or abuse charges.
