DETROIT (WXYZ) - Police sources tell 7 Action News that the man who they believe initiated the carjacking of Pastor Marvin Winans and assaulted him, has been arrested.
Three people are now in custody in connection with the carjacking and robbery. At least one more suspect, a 17-year-old, has been identified but is still at large.
Police believe those involved are connected to a gang known as "The Linwood Boys".
Sources believe the 20-year-old man arrested Friday punched Winans during the carjacking at the Citgo gas station on Detroit's west side two days ago.
Action News has also learned that Pastor Winans' identification and credit cards have been recovered although his watch and money are still missing.
On Thursday, police recovered Winans' stolen vehicle on Detroit's west side in good shape. Someone dumped it behind an abandoned home on Wager and Dexter streets.
Sources tell 7 Action News that the keys to the vehicle were actually found during the search of a home on Tyler Street about four miles away.
7 Action News has learned that Pastor Winans picked out two of the people who assaulted him during a photo lineup.
Investigators say they were able to identify the two of the suspects within minutes of Wednesday's carjacking because earlier in the day Detroit Police officers issued them loitering tickets. They were removed from the area but later returned.
Pastor Winans was pumping gas at a Citgo station at Linwood and Davison when he was assaulted Wednesday afternoon .
In addition to his car, Winans was also robbed of about $200 and his watch. His pants were ripped in the assault and he suffered several cuts and bruises and an injury to his finger.
"Given the gravity of the situation, it was minor," said Winans during a Wednesday night interview with 7 Action News while speaking about the injuries he sustained to his hand. He said his finger would remain bandaged for about eight weeks.
Winans said he was disturbed that this happened "in the middle of the afternoon" and, at first, "nobody came to help."
In February, security cameras at another Detroit gas station recorded video of an 86-year-old man who was carjacked as others passed by and ignored him .
"Your life has to be bigger than sitting in a gas station and robbing innocent people," Winans said in a message to his carjackers during the interview Wednesday night.
According to police sources there were four to five individuals involved in the carjacking.
Earlier this week, Detroit police told 7 Action News about a new trend in carjacking incidents in the city. They said some carjackers were using prostitutes to setup and distract victims .
